Best Mac mini for OpenClaw in 2026: Memory, Models and Price

October 22, 20266 min readby Macyou Team

If OpenClaw talks to a hosted model such as Claude, GPT or Gemini, any Mac mini Apple sells today is enough, the base M6 with 16 GB included. Memory starts to matter only when the model runs on the Mac itself. At the 64K context OpenClaw’s own recipes use, 24 GB is the first size that fits a current mid size model, Gemma 4 26B A4B; 32 GB adds Qwen3.6 35B A3B and Qwen3.8 27B; an M5 Pro with 48 GB adds headroom and speed. Below: what fits on each configuration, how fast it runs, and what it costs. Prices and specifications checked 22 October 2026.

With a hosted model, any Mac mini will do

OpenClaw is a gateway that runs on Node.js (24.16, or 26.1 and newer). It holds your chat channels, tools, memory files and a browser for web tasks, and sends each turn to the model. With a hosted model the heavy work happens on the provider’s servers. OpenClaw’s documentation sets an 8 GiB memory floor for its smallest local model recipe; a hosted model takes that load off the Mac entirely, so 16 GB leaves plenty of room for the gateway, a browser and macOS.

With a local model, memory decides

An agent turn is longer than a chat message. OpenClaw sends its instructions, the tool list, memory and the conversation with every turn, so the model needs a long context window, and that context takes memory on top of the weights. OpenClaw’s managed llama.cpp recipes use a 64K context, and its documentation advises against small or heavily quantized model variants. The table applies the arithmetic of our Mac LLM calculator: 4 bit (Q4_K_M) weights, a 64K context and 3 GB left for macOS.

Prices are Apple’s US list prices with the smallest SSD for each memory size: 256 GB on the M6, 512 GB on the M5 Pro. Speeds are estimates from our formula, fitted to measured runs on a base M4 and an M5 Pro, where its worst error was 4.6 percent; we have not measured an M6 yet. Gemma 4 26B A4B and Qwen3.6 35B A3B are mixture of experts models: each token reads only a few billion active parameters, which is why they generate faster than smaller dense models. Each model has its own guide, from Qwen3.8 27B to Gemma 4 26B A4B.

Which one to buy

  • Hosted model only: the M6 with 16 GB, $899.
  • A local model on a budget: the M6 with 24 GB, $1,099, runs Gemma 4 26B A4B at about 44 tokens per second.
  • The best value for a local agent: the M6 with 32 GB, $1,299, adds Qwen3.6 35B A3B at about 54 tokens per second and Qwen3.8 27B with the full 64K context.
  • Headroom and speed: the M5 Pro with 48 GB, $2,299, reads memory at 307 GB/s, about 1.8 times the M6, fits Gemma 4 31B as well, and runs Qwen3.6 35B A3B at about 85 tokens per second.

The wait before the first word

Generation speed is only half of an agent turn. Before the first word, the Mac has to process the whole prompt. On a base M4 we measured prompt processing at 531 to 1,720 tokens per second for models from 3B to 14B (our benchmarks, Ollama, July 2026). At 600 tokens per second, every 10,000 new tokens of instructions, tools and history add about 17 seconds before the reply starts. The llama.cpp server keeps the part of the prompt it has already processed and evaluates only what changed since the previous request, so later turns cost less as long as the start of the prompt stays the same.

Mac mini or Mac Studio

The Mac mini stops at 64 GB. Larger open models need a Mac Studio: at the same 64K context, Qwen3.8 Flash Next needs about 131 GB and DeepSeek V4 Flash about 225 GB, which means the M5 Ultra with 256 GB. The M5 Max Mac Studio goes up to 128 GB.

A Mac mini you already own

An M1, M2 or M4 Mac mini runs OpenClaw with a hosted model as well as a new one. For local models the same memory rules apply at lower speed: Gemma 4 26B A4B runs at about 33 tokens per second on an M4 with 24 GB, against about 44 on an M6 with 24 GB. An Intel Mac can still host the gateway if it runs a macOS version that current Node.js supports.

When OpenClaw needs a Mac

OpenClaw also runs on Linux and Windows. A Mac earns its place for two things: local models in unified memory, and macOS itself, including iMessage, which OpenClaw reaches through a command line tool that runs on a Mac signed in to Messages.

Hermes Agent

The same reasoning holds for Hermes Agent from Nous Research. It installs on macOS, Linux and Windows and works with hosted models or your own endpoint, so it needs a Mac when you want the model, or macOS, on the same machine. Pointed at a local model on a Mac mini, it needs the memory in the table above.

Buy one or rent one

A new Mac mini now starts at $899, up from $599 for the M4 generation, and Apple’s refurbished store had no M4 models in October. If you would rather not buy hardware for an agent, we rent dedicated M4 Mac minis from $80/mo billed annually or $99/mo billed monthly, with 24 GB from $113/mo and with 32 GB from $130/mo billed annually. The agent gets a whole machine of its own, away from your personal computer and your home network. The buy or rent calculator compares both over one to three years, electricity included.

Questions

Is 16 GB enough for OpenClaw?

Yes with a hosted model. With a local model at a 64K context, 16 GB holds only the 7B and 8B models in the table, and 24 GB is where Gemma 4 26B A4B fits.

How much memory does OpenClaw need?

OpenClaw’s install guide lists no memory minimum for the gateway itself; the model decides. A hosted model needs no model memory on the Mac. A local model at a 64K context needs about 10 GB for Llama 3.1 8B and about 27 GB for Qwen3.6 35B A3B, plus room for macOS.

Mac mini M4 or M6 for OpenClaw?

With a hosted model the chip makes no practical difference. For local models the M6 reads memory faster, 153 GB/s with 16 GB and 170 GB/s with 24 or 32 GB, against 120 GB/s on the base M4, so the same model generates noticeably faster.
