Xcode 27 system requirements: which Mac you need in 2026

Xcode 27 needs macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later. Every Apple silicon Mac qualifies, and so do exactly four Intel models. Since 28 April 2026 the App Store accepts only builds from Xcode 26 or newer, so the macOS your Mac can run now decides whether you can ship. Below: the macOS each Xcode needs, which Macs run it, how much memory to get, and what to do if your Mac is too old.

Three facts everything else follows from

Since 28 April 2026, App Store Connect requires Xcode 26 or later. Builds must use an SDK for iOS 26, iPadOS 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26 or watchOS 26. A project that still compiles in Xcode 16 can no longer be uploaded.

Xcode 27 requires macOS Tahoe 26.6. Xcode 26.4 and later need Tahoe 26.2. Only Xcode 26.0 to 26.3 still install on macOS Sequoia 15.6. The newer the Xcode, the newer the macOS, and your Mac has to support that macOS.

macOS 27 shipped on 14 September 2026 for Apple silicon only. Tahoe 26 is the last macOS for Intel Macs, and only four models get it. Plan on the next major Xcode leaving every Intel Mac behind.

Will your Mac run Xcode 27?

Apple silicon. Every Apple silicon Mac installs macOS 27 and Xcode 27. The only questions are memory and disk, covered below.

Intel, four models. MacBook Pro (16 inch, 2019), MacBook Pro (13 inch, 2020, four Thunderbolt 3 ports), iMac (Retina 5K, 27 inch, 2020) and Mac Pro (2019) install Tahoe 26, so they run Xcode 27 while Apple ships Tahoe updates. macOS 27 is not available for them, so this is their last Xcode generation.

Every other Intel Mac. Macs from 2018 and 2019 without Tahoe stop at Sequoia 15 and Xcode 26.3. They can still upload while Apple accepts the iOS 26.2 SDK, but that window closes with the next SDK requirement. Macs older than 2018 cannot reach Sequoia and cannot produce App Store builds in 2026 at all.

visionOS. Developing for visionOS requires a Mac with Apple silicon, whatever the Xcode version.

How much memory and disk Xcode needs

Memory. 16 GB handles one project and one Simulator comfortably; that is the base M4 Mac mini. 8 GB works on paper, but the Simulator plus a browser plus a chat app push it into swap and builds slow down noticeably. For parallel CI builds or several Simulators at once, choose 24 GB or more.

Disk. Xcode with Simulator runtimes and build caches takes tens of gigabytes and grows with every SDK. 256 GB is enough for one or two projects if you clear DerivedData regularly; for a team or several SDKs, 512 GB is the safer size.

Your Mac is too old, or you have no Mac

Xcode exists only for macOS. Cross platform frameworks such as Flutter, React Native and Kotlin Multiplatform let you write code on Windows or Linux, but building, signing and uploading the iOS app still happens on a Mac.

The fastest fix is a dedicated cloud Mac. A Macyou M4 Mac mini is Apple silicon, so it supports macOS 27 and Xcode 27, and it comes with SSH and a remote desktop in your browser. It starts at $99 a month and is ready in about 5 minutes. Anything that needs administrator rights, such as installing or switching Xcode versions, Simulator runtimes or macOS updates, is done by an operator on request, free and the same day. You test on your own iPhone through TestFlight. It also works as a self hosted runner for your CI.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Xcode 27 system requirements?

Xcode 27 requires macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later. It includes the iOS 27, tvOS 27, watchOS 27, visionOS 27 and macOS 27 SDKs and the Swift 6.4 compiler. Any Mac that can install Tahoe 26.6 or macOS 27 can run it; developing for visionOS additionally requires Apple silicon.

Can I run Xcode 27 on an Intel Mac?

Only on the four Intel models that support macOS Tahoe 26: MacBook Pro (16 inch, 2019), MacBook Pro (13 inch, 2020, four Thunderbolt 3 ports), iMac (Retina 5K, 27 inch, 2020) and Mac Pro (2019). macOS 27 runs on Apple silicon only, so Tahoe is the last macOS for these machines, and the next major Xcode is unlikely to run on any Intel Mac.

Does Xcode 26 run on macOS 27?

Apple lists Xcode 26.4 to 26.6 for macOS Tahoe 26.2 through Tahoe 26.x, so macOS 27 is outside the supported range. On macOS 27 the supported choice is Xcode 27, which also builds apps that target older iOS versions.

What is the minimum Xcode for App Store submissions in 2026?

Since 28 April 2026, App Store Connect accepts only builds made with Xcode 26 or later using an SDK for iOS 26, iPadOS 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26 or watchOS 26. A project that still builds in Xcode 16 can no longer be uploaded.

How much RAM do I need for Xcode?

16 GB is comfortable for one project and one Simulator, which is the base M4 Mac mini. 8 GB works but starts swapping once the Simulator, a browser and chat apps are open. For parallel CI builds or several Simulators at once, choose 24 GB or more.

Can I use Xcode without owning a compatible Mac?

Yes. Xcode only runs on macOS, but the Mac does not have to be on your desk. A dedicated cloud Mac on Apple silicon runs Xcode 27, the Simulator and a remote desktop, and you test on your own iPhone through TestFlight. At Macyou a dedicated M4 Mac mini starts at $99 a month.
