The short version

AWS EC2 Mac, mac instances on Amazon Web Services, is a good fit for teams already deep in the AWS ecosystem who need Mac for CI/CD. Entry pricing is about $641/mo for a M2 · 24 GB · Dedicated machine. The two things most people miss before signing up: 24-hour minimum billing cycle and dedicated Host required, billed per host hour. If your workload is AI inference rather than iOS builds, the lack of pre-installed inference stacks is the biggest practical gap.

What we checked, and when

Reading the AWS EC2 Mac price list

The number that matters is the host hour, and nothing is a round month. Take the hourly rate, multiply by 730, then add EBS for the root volume (a macOS image with Xcode or a few models is hundreds of gigabytes), egress at standard rates, and the engineering time for IAM, VPC and the six hour first boot. Savings Plans cut the host rate in exchange for one or three year commitments, which makes sense only if the Mac runs all the time anyway. The M4 rows change the picture for AI: the hardware is finally current, but each step up roughly doubles the rate, so the M4 Pro host costs 2.2 times the M2 host for the same 24 hour minimum.

AWS EC2 Mac instances let you run macOS on dedicated Mac hardware within the AWS cloud. While this integrates with the broader AWS ecosystem (IAM, VPC, CloudWatch), it comes with significant limitations: a mandatory 24 hour minimum allocation for dedicated hosts, complex IAM configuration, and host pricing that reflects AWS enterprise margins. On demand host rates in us-east-1, unchanged in the AWS price list published 2026-10-09: mac2-m2 $0.878/h, mac-m4 $1.23/h, mac-m4pro $1.97/h, which is $641, $898 and $1,438 per month at 730 hours. EU regions cost 10 to 20% more.

Who should choose AWS EC2 Mac

EC2 Mac is the right call when the rest of your stack is already on AWS and the Mac has to sit in the same VPC with the same IAM, or when you need a fleet spun up and down under automation. For one always on Mac it is the most expensive option on this site by a wide margin, and the 24 hour minimum removes the one advantage hourly billing would have had.

Does AWS EC2 Mac have M4 instances?

Yes, as of our October 2026 check: mac-m4.metal (M4, 24 GB), mac-m4pro.metal (M4 Pro, 48 GB), mac-m4max.metal (M4 Max, 128 GB) and mac-m3ultra.metal (M3 Ultra, 256 GB), alongside the older M1 and M2 hosts. Earlier in 2026 the lineup stopped at M2.

How much does an EC2 M4 Mac cost per month?

In us-east-1 on demand, the mac-m4 host is $1.23 per hour (about $898 a month at 730 hours) and the mac-m4pro host is $1.97 per hour (about $1,438 a month), before EBS storage and data transfer. EU regions run 10 to 20% higher.

Why does EC2 Mac have a 24 hour minimum?

Apple's macOS licensing for cloud providers requires a minimum lease of 24 hours per physical Mac. AWS implements it as a Dedicated Host allocation with a 24 hour minimum; Scaleway applies the same rule. Providers that sell monthly dedicated Macs sidestep it by never billing by the hour.
